To provide an intrusive community mentoring environment that help students discover, develop, and apply their strengths and talents so that they will persist, achieve and gain maximum benefits from the college experience.

In The Beginning

The Our House pilot program began in August 2014 with 5 figurative “houses” made up of 6 mentors and 10 students in each “house” for a total 30 mentors and 50 student mentees. The 6 mentors include one faculty mentor, one staff mentor, one alumni mentor, two junior/senior student mentors, and one mentor from the faith-based community. The 50 students were first-time full-time students randomly selected from the First Year Experience program. The program staff includes a director, coordinator and administrative assistant. Every mentor (except the faculty mentor) is responsible for serving as the primary mentor for two freshmen mentees. The number one role of the mentor is to cultivate a close relationship with their individual mentees while being a friendly, encouraging, and accessible guide. Mentors are required to conduct weekly engagement via telephone, email, Twitter, Facebook, or other social media outlets.
